Corrected WBC Count

Corrects the total leukocyte count for the presence of nucleated red blood cells (nRBCs) seen on the peripheral smear.

Corrected WBC = (Uncorrected WBC × 100) ÷ (100 + nRBC per 100 WBC)

Absolute Reticulocyte Count & Reticulocyte Production Index

Converts a reticulocyte percentage into an absolute count and, using the patient's hematocrit, an RPI that reflects true marrow response to anemia.

Absolute Retic = (Retic % ÷ 100) × RBC count
RPI = [Retic % × (Patient Hct ÷ 45)] ÷ Maturation Correction Factor

RBC Indices — MCV, MCH, MCHC

Calculates the three red cell indices from hemoglobin, hematocrit and RBC count — the core of anemia classification.

MCV = (Hct ÷ RBC) × 10  |  MCH = (Hb ÷ RBC) × 10  |  MCHC = (Hb ÷ Hct) × 100

Used to help classify metabolic acidosis into high anion-gap vs. normal anion-gap categories.

Anion Gap = Na⁺ − (Cl⁻ + HCO₃⁻)  |  Normal range: 8–16 mEq/L

Corrected (Albumin-Adjusted) Calcium

Adjusts total serum calcium for low albumin, since roughly 40% of calcium circulates bound to albumin.

Corrected Ca = Measured Ca + 0.8 × (4.0 − Serum Albumin)

Creatinine Clearance (Cockcroft-Gault)

Estimates creatinine clearance as a marker of glomerular filtration rate.

CrCl = [(140 − Age) × Weight(kg) × (0.85 if female)] ÷ (72 × Serum Creatinine)

Calculated Serum Osmolality & Osmolar Gap

Estimates serum osmolality from sodium, glucose and BUN, and compares it against a measured value if available.

Osmolality = 2 × Na⁺ + (Glucose ÷ 18) + (BUN ÷ 2.8)
